Submission Guidelines

Guidelines

We would like to read your work. To ensure that we are able to, please follow both the general and the genre guidelines carefully. Incorrectly formatted submissions may be ignored. Read on for details and addresses.

Reading Periods

We accept submissions on a rolling basis. Certain genres close from time to time. We currently publish new work on the first three Mondays of each month. We have chosen to publish a lower volume of work than some online journals; this allows each piece more exposure. Room to breathe, as it were. It also means that we have to reject a fair number of good submissions, for what it’s worth. We look forward to seeing your work.

Theme Issues

Fringe’s Spring 2012 issue theme is REMNANTS. The submission period for this special issue closed March 15, 2012. Check back next fall for our next theme issue.

How to Submit

Email submissions to the appropriate address (click on relevant genre above). Your subject line should include your last name and the title of your piece (or the title of the first piece, if you’re sending more than one). (Ex.: Doe, “My Summer Vacation”). In the body of your email, include your name, a cover letter, the title(s) of the pieces and a press-ready bio. Do not attach this information in a separate file.

Attaching your work: We prefer to read your work in Word or RTF attachments (PC platform) for text, .jpg, .gif, or .png format for images. Be sure your document has a file extension, or we may not be able to open it! Do not include your name in filenames or within files. If you do, we will not be able to read your submission.

Check out the Fringe blog for tips on how to get out of the slush pile and how to write a killer cover letter.

Simultaneous/Multiple Submissions

Are accepted, provided that you identify them as such and agree to notify us immediately if a piece has been accepted elsewhere. Please do not send Fringe more than two total submissions at a time. Wait to hear from us before sending anything more.

Previously Published Work

Is not accepted. We consider work that has appeared in print journals or on blogs or other websites to be previously published.

Queries

Please wait 3 months before querying genre editors directly. If you have pitched an article to Features, feel free to query after four weeks.

Acceptance

If your work is accepted, we will contact you at the email address you’ve provided. We acquire first electronic publishing rights. All other rights revert to the writer after publication. Published work remains part of Fringe’s online archive. If the work is reprinted, we ask that you acknowledge Fringe as the original place of publication.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer payment for the work we publish at this time.
