Our Manifesto.
In today's mass-conglomerate publishing world — where corporate bookstores have taken the place of small, independent, locally-owned shops — it can be hard to find the voices of those who support a more progressive agenda. Because larger retailers market to mainstream perspectives, magazines that cater to specific groups (feminist, Afrofuturist, environmental) find themselves going the way of the 8-track. These vanishing small magazines are the natural mechanism by which fringe writers mix into the mainstream.  Without these venues for expression, fringe opinions and individuals who identify with them paradoxically become alienated by mass culture and absorbed by it.

Fringe Magazine was created by a group of forward-thinking individuals interested in providing space for artists who want to experiment with old forms and engender the new. Fringe is the noun that verbs your world. We are about writing that confronts and questions. We want to challenge perceptions, to drive readers to action — but it's not all about the politics. Fringe also provides a venue for those artists whose work takes their genre into the next paradigm — those who play with form, who work outside of the box — those who are on the fringe.

Currently, Fringe offers a survey of genres every other month, publishing a single work in each genre.  As we grow, we hope to be truly progressive in approach -- exploring the areas between genres, and adding original music, flash cartoons and video to our site.

We will conclude with a brief song.  Please rise.
